When should you see a Dental Hygienist ?

For a healthy, bright smile, see a dental hygienist on a regular basis to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Early detection of gum disease, cavities and oral cancer is important to maintain your eating, smiling and overall health. If you have swollen gums, sensitive teeth, are interested in whitening and/or want to maintain your smile, schedule an appointment with a dental hygienist. Patients often see their dental hygienist twice a year or more frequently based on individual oral health needs.

What is Dental Hygiene?

Dental Hygiene concentrates on maintaining healthy teeth and gums, early detection of disease, cavity prevention, teeth whitening, oral hygiene instructions, dental x-rays, diet counseling, and tobacco cessation education. The dental hygienist is a licensed dental professional who plays an integral role in the dental team by focusing on prevention of disease.

What is a Dental Hygienist ?

A dental hygienist must have graduated from an accredited dental hygiene program and passed national written, clinical, and state licensing exams. The dental hygiene students who provide care at WVU Dental have completed at least half of their four-year degree. Treatment from a dental hygiene student is provided to patients under the direct supervision of licensed dental professional.
